Southampton – Newcastle Predictions and Preview
- It seems almost certain that Southampton will again play in the Championship next season. The Saints have won just one of their 22 Premier League games this term, with three draws and 18 losses. If you convert the points to three for a win across the whole of time, Southampton’s six points is the joint-second lowest tally after 22 top-flight games. Only Bolton in 1902/03 ever had fewer at this stage (3). Recovering from this position seems nearly impossible.
- The Saints start their unlikely road to redemption against Newcastle. However, playing the north-eastern club doesn’t offer much hope. They have won just one of the last 13 Premier League home games (D3, L9). New boss Ivan Juric will hope he can be the one to break that spell. But having lost all five of his Premier League games in charge, he is finding the adaptation process difficult himself.
- At the other end of the table, Newcastle saw their joint-club record nine-match winning streak ended by Bournemouth last week in a humbling 4-1 home defeat. They will be confident of bouncing back. They have not lost successive games since October, and having won their last three Premier League away games, they could now win four such games in a row for the first time since October 1996!
- A record of one defeat from their last 23 Premier League games against promoted sides (W14, D8) would suggest they are good value to do so. As would the fact the Magpies have won all six home games since Eddie Howe took over. As if they needed any more cause for optimism, Newcastle have won seven of their eight Premier League games against sides starting this round 15th or lower (D1).
- Players to watch: Paul Onuachu opened his Southampton account in a 3-2 defeat against Nottingham Forest last week. That stoppage time strike ended a run of four first-half goals at club level. Bruno Guimarães was also on target last weekend, but he is more commonly on the floor. He has been fouled 76 times in the Premier League this season, the most of any player.
- Hot stat: Southampton have conceded a league-high eight Premier League home goals after the 75th minute this term.
