Tottenham – Leicester Predictions and Preview

  • While Tottenham continues to make a splash in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions, their Premier League campaign is in disarray. As their busy January schedule gets underway, manager Ange Postecoglou has admitted that there may not be any more signings to strengthen the squad. This weekend, they will host Leicester with no fewer than ten players missing.
  • Spurs have been in a slump for the past ten Premier League games, winning only against last-placed Southampton. The past three months have shown that even at their home stadium, which was once considered a fortress, they can’t take out-of-form Leicester for granted. Not only did Tottenham lose to newly promoted Ipswich at home in November (2-1), but they have failed to add another Premier League win in front of their own fans since (D2, L3), with a 2-2 draw against another relegation-threatened side, Wolves, being another low point.
  • Leicester marked their return to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at home to Spurs in the opening round. However, five losses from their last six trips to Tottenham (W1) suggest they will need to be in much better shape than they are now to improve upon that result. Replicating it with another draw would not only end a five-game away losing streak in this competition but also see them take points off Spurs twice in a single league season for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2015/16.
  • If they can’t do it, the Foxes will equal a club record eight consecutive Premier League losses. But with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team failing to score in five of their last seven league games, and reports of the manager engaging in an angry exchange with his players following last round’s 2-0 loss at home to Fulham, happier times don’t seem to be around the corner.
  • Key battle: Dejan Kulusevski continues to achieve personal success, scoring in seven of his last 13 competitive appearances. However, Spurs won only three of those seven games (D1, L3). On the other hand, Leicester’s Jakub Stolarczyk became the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to concede 2+ goals in each of his first five appearances.
  • Hot stat: Tottenham scored 3+ goals in nine of their last ten Premier League wins over Leicester.
