Lyon – Reims Predictions and Preview

  • The Ligue 1 action kicks off on Sunday in Lyon, where the club is currently experiencing their second-longest winless streak (five draws and two losses) of this century. This has caused them to lose ground in the race for European qualification and also led to their elimination from the Coupe de France. As a result, Paulo Fonseca, their new manager, was appointed. After losing his first game in charge 3-2 in the Choc des Olympiques, he will hope for a more positive home debut.
  • Lyon’s return to their own stadium is sure to inspire confidence. The club has kept as many clean sheets in their last six home league games (four wins and two draws) as they did in the 17 previous ones. A third consecutive home league clean sheet would be their longest such run since 2017/18. However, a visit from Reims could dash those hopes. Lyon’s win rate in this matchup (26% – 16 wins, 18 draws, 18 losses) is their worst against any current Ligue 1 club.
  • Reims, like their hosts, are also on a tragic winless streak of league games (five draws and four losses). This is now the longest active run of any side this season. In fact, one must look back to 2012/13 to find Reims’ last longer run of winless league outings in a single season. That run included a 3-0 defeat here in Lyon. Now, Reims are perilously close to the drop zone, and their former assistant manager Samba Diawara has been tasked with steering them to safety.
  • Diawara has previous experience as a caretaker boss. He remained unbeaten in his three games in charge following Will Still’s departure (two wins and one draw). Emulating his first stint in charge will be a great challenge for him. However, he takes charge of a team that has picked up the majority of their points on the road and remains unbeaten in two-thirds of their away league games so far this season (three wins, three draws, three losses).
  • Players to watch:
  • * Alexandre Lacazette, after scoring his 152nd Ligue 1 goal in the previous round, has the opportunity to join the top 20 all-time top scoring players in the league’s history with another goal this weekend.
  • * Jordan Siebatcheu, who returned to Reims after spending a number of years playing in Switzerland and Germany, will hope to replicate the goal he scored in his only away appearance against Lyon.
  • Hot stat:
  • * Twelve of Reims’ last 15 away league games saw both teams score on the day (80%).
