Empoli – AC Milan Predictions and Preview

  • After a six-game unbeaten streak in Serie A, Empoli has only scored two league wins since, and they are now winless in their last eight matches in the league (two draws and six losses). As a result, they start the round just one point above the relegation zone. It seems unlikely that things will improve as they face AC Milan, a team they haven’t beaten at home since January 1986.
  • In recent weeks, Empoli has shown that they can compete with teams of similar quality to Milan. They took the lead against both Juventus and Bologna before losing in comeback games (one draw and one loss). However, these results mean that they still have to beat a team that started the round in the top eight this term (four draws and seven losses). One of those losses came in the reverse fixture (3-0), making up a miserable return of one win from the last 16 home-and-away matches (five draws and ten losses).
  • Milan saw a memorable derby win over Inter Milan slip through their fingers on Sunday. They conceded in the 93rd minute and were held to a fourth draw in their last eight Serie A matches (three wins and one loss). While Sérgio Conceição’s men remain tough to beat and have since bounced back with a Coppa Italia victory over Roma in midweek, such inconsistency in the win column leaves them with ground to make up for the European places.
  • Worryingly, the Rossoneri have lost their last two away games in all competitions and are facing the prospect of three consecutive defeats on the road for the first time since May 2015. The travelling faithful will expect to avoid that unwanted piece of history given that they’ve seen their side keep four consecutive clean sheets against Empoli in the league – one more would match their all-time record achieved against Pisa between 1988 and 1991.
  • Players to watch:
  • * Mattia DeSciglio played more games for Milan than he has for any club in his career (133). He has shown that he can haunt his former sides when scoring against parent club Juventus last weekend for his first goal in three years.
  • * João Félix scored on his Milan debut in midweek, but he hasn’t scored in successive appearances since November 2023.
  • Hot stat: Eight of Milan’s last nine away games have seen them pick up the first yellow card.
