Ludogorets – AZ Alkmaar Predictions and Preview

  • After five matchdays in the league phase of the UEFA Europa League (UEL), Ludogorets are one of only five teams without a win. They have played two draws and three losses, and they have scored only one goal in that time. However, there are some hopeful signs for the Eagles ahead of their next match. Two weeks ago, they played a tough goalless draw against high-flying Lazio.
  • Since earning that potentially valuable point in Rome, Ludogorets has won three consecutive games without conceding a goal in the Bulgarian league. But they need more victories because they are currently three points behind the knockout-phase play-off places.
  • A lot depends on their match against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday. They have won three of their four previous meetings with Dutch clubs, and they’ll be encouraged by that.
  • AZ has had a mixed UEL campaign so far. They have won two games, drawn one, and lost two. Their best performance was a great 3-1 win over Fenerbahçe. After winning back-to-back games in the Eredivisie to start the month, the most recent of which was against Ajax (2-1), the Cheese Farmers should enter Thursday’s match confident. They haven’t lost any of their three previous meetings with Bulgarian teams.
  • Even when losing, Maarten Martens’ men are a tough opponent on the road. Five of their last six such matches have been decided by just a single goal. After falling on the wrong side of tight margins so often, the AZ fans will want to see an improvement in their team’s travelling form in the UEL. They have only won one of their last eight away games in the competition.
  • Players to watch: After two consecutive substitute goalscoring appearances for Ludogorets in December, Kwadwo Duah is surely close to being handed a start. He has scored three times in European qualifying this season. Similarly effective off the bench has been Mayckel Lahdo, who has come up with the decisive goal in AZ’s last two games. He last scored in November 2023.
  • Hot stat: AZ have been level at HT in each of their last five wins.
