Brentford – Tottenham Predictions and Preview

  • Brentford ended a five-game losing streak in London derbies in the Premier League with an important 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace last week. This victory put them within striking distance of the top half of the table. Head coach Thomas Frank was especially pleased with their defensive performance. Considering that the Bees have scored and conceded more goals than several higher-ranked clubs, further improvement at the back could lead to more success.
  • Their home fans will be eager for some joy after enduring four consecutive Premier League games at the Gtech Community Stadium without a victory. However, with four opponents in the top four round, Brentford can certainly be forgiven for such results. Their other seven wins from their eight Premier League home games give a more accurate reflection of how they might fare in pursuit of their first win on their own turf against Tottenham in any competition since 1947/48.
  • While Tottenham continue to succeed in secondary competitions, their Premier League campaign is lurching from one failure to another. The ongoing injury crisis meant they couldn’t fill their bench in a 2-1 loss at home to Leicester last week. As a result, they’ve won just once in the league since thrashing Manchester City, despite opening the scoring six times in that period.
  • That defeat last round also meant that since a 4-1 win at home to Aston Villa in early November, Spurs have failed to win eight consecutive Premier League games in London as either the home or away side. It’s little wonder that angry supporters redirected their dissent from beleaguered manager Ange Postecoglou to chairman Daniel Levy. They unfurled a banner calling for an end to a 24-year stewardship that has produced nothing more than one League Cup.
  • Players to watch: Yoane Wissa does his best work on home turf. He has scored nine of his 11 goals in the Premier League this season there, and four of his last seven were the team’s first goal of the match. Richarlison has been a most welcome returnee for Spurs, scoring their last two Premier League goals, even if both came in defeats.
  • Hot stat: Brentford led at half-time in just one of their last ten Premier League games.
