Atalanta – Bologna Predictions and Preview

  • On Tuesday evening, Atalanta and Bologna will meet in the quarter-finals of the 2024-25 Coppa Italia. This is the third time in six seasons that Atalanta has reached the final of the tournament, and Gian Piero Gasperini is leading his team on a familiar path, hoping to replicate their only success in the competition from the 1962-63 season.
  • The last time these two teams met in this competition was in the 2001-02 season, when La Dea advanced to the next round due to the away goals rule. Winning has been a challenge for the hosts here. After winning 15 of 17 games across all competitions from October until Christmas (with one draw and one loss), Atalanta has struggled to get over the line with only two victories in their last nine matches (with five draws and two losses).
  • Bologna, on the other hand, have shared the spoils more often than not so far in 2025 (with three wins and four draws), but they are still unbeaten since the turn of the year and have lost just once in all competitions from the end of November onwards (with seven wins and six draws). They will travel to Bergamo with an excellent recent away record, winning on their last two visits, which is a far cry from the 11-match winless run they posted in away games before (with three draws and eight losses).
  • Overall, there have been four meetings since Bologna last lost to Atalanta, and if Vincenzo Italiano’s side can make it five in a row, then fans of the Red and Blues can start to dream of winning the Coppa Italia again, something they did in their first two finals in 1970 and 1974, but have never made it that far again since!
  • Players to watch: Mateo Retegui had a slow December, contributing only one assist in the Coppa Italia, but in 2025 he has already scored five times, with three of those goals coming at home. Charalampos Lykogiannis is another player who has had a strong start to the year with three assists from six games, although he has received a booking in both of his last two appearances.
  • Hot stat: There have been 4+ match goals in eight of Atalanta’s last nine home games in the Coppa Italia.
