AC Milan – Liverpool Predictions and Preview

  • The newly formatted UEFA Champions League (UCL) promises to deliver thrilling matches during the League Phase. And it certainly did not disappoint with the matchday one tie between AC Milan and Liverpool.
  • Both teams have a rich history of European triumphs, with each having claimed a trophy at the expense of the other. The famous comeback of Liverpool in Istanbul in 2005 is still talked about, followed by Milan’s revenge two years later in Athens.
  • However, Milan’s last triumph in one of Europe’s three major club competitions was in 2007. Since then, their record against English clubs has been dismal, winning just three out of 21 encounters (D6, L12), including a pair of defeats to Liverpool in the 2021/22 UCL group stage.
  • The San Siro has also lost its status as one of the continent’s fortresses, with Milan winning less than half of their previous 18 home games in European competitions (W7, D3, L8).
  • Fast forward to the present day, and Milan looked even more vulnerable until their 4-0 win over Venezia at the weekend. This result was much needed for new manager Paulo Fonseca after a terrible start to his tenure with three winless games in Serie A (D2, L1).
  • His counterpart Arne Slot also began his tenure with three consecutive wins without conceding until they suffered a massive upset by going down 1-0 against Nottingham Forest.
  • Now, he is tasked with re-introducing Liverpool to the UCL after last season’s stint in the UEFA Europa League. However, there may be some nerves in the camp since that attempt ended in Italy against eventual champions Atalanta.
  • Players to watch: Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be looking to reinvent himself against Liverpool in a Milan shirt. He failed to register a goal or assist in eight prior games against them during his time in England.
  • Luis Díaz will be hoping to steal the show for Liverpool. He has scored in their first European game of the season for two years running.
  • Hot stat: Liverpool have won eight of their last ten away games in the UCL (L2), and both teams have scored in seven of those ten matches.
