Celtic – Slovan Bratislava Predictions and Preview

  • The 2024/25 season of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) introduces a new league format. Celtic, the winners of the European Cup in 1966/67, will kick off their campaign with a home match against one of their weakest opponents in the league phase. A strong start will be crucial for their chances of reaching the knockout rounds for the first time since 2012/13.
  • However, it won’t be easy for Celtic. Although they have started the Scottish Premiership season perfectly without conceding a goal (W5), they have never won the opening match of a UCL campaign to date (D2, L10). This record will concern manager Brendan Rodgers, as will the fact that his team has won just one of their last 13 home UCL group stage outings (D3, L9).
  • Slovan Bratislava, the visitors, will likely think very similarly about their matchday one opponents. They arrive in Scotland at the top of the Slovak Super Liga after six matches (W5, L1), full of confidence as they chase down their first European win against a British team since beating Derby County 1-0 in September 1975.
  • Their record against such opposition since then (D2, L7) may slightly dent their spirits, but an impressive record of just two defeats across their last seven away European outings highlights their capabilities on the road (excluding qualifiers – W4, D1). They will also be desperate to set the tone early on in their first-ever UCL group/league appearance, becoming just the fourth side from Slovakia to reach this stage of the competition in history.
  • Players to watch: Celtic’s Callum McGregor has made a fantastic start to this season, scoring three goals in five league games. He could strike again here, as all four of his goals at the European group stage have come at home. Tigran Barseghyan looks like Slovan’s best bet to get on the scoresheet, as he has already netted eight competitive goals this term, four of which were decisive in victory.
  • Hot stat: Celtic’s last ten UCL matches have seen an average of 3.4 match goals.
