It is time for the first ‘De Topper’ of the season, as reigning champions PSV host last season’s runners up Ajax. The two sides – still unbeaten in the league this season – have 57 Eredivisie titles between them, the most of any two-team combination in the Dutch system.
Appropriately, the all-time H2H record between the sides is almost symmetrical. Across all Eredivisie games played between the sides, PSV lead the way by just four victories (W52, D24, L48). PSV have also beaten Ajax to nil here in each of the last two seasons.
Twenty-one goals in five opening games is PSV’s highest return since the turn of the century, they have only bettered this twice in their history (1961 & 1987). Furthermore, Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has lost all six of his league games against PSV, with his team on the day conceding two or more goals each time.
The hosts are not messing about with their title defence, and have been winning at both HT/FT in all of their Eredivisie games so far. However, this will be a real test of that record, as the visitors are the only team to have not conceded an away goal so far this term.
Players to watch: Steven Bergwijn has scored three goals from his last two Eredivisie starts, he bagged the winner in this fixture last term.
Dušan Tadić has been involved with 12 goals in his last 11 starts for Ajax, in all competitions (seven goals, five assists).
Stat attack: Ajax are unbeaten in eight of their last nine competitive away games (W6, D2, L1), their only defeat in this sequence came here to PSV.
Only one team has scored in four of the last five meetings between the sides.
Three of the games in that sequence produced under 2.5 goals.
