Animosities between these two inter-city rivals date back to 1924, and though the names of the on-field combatants change, the significance of the local pride at stake never does.
Fenerbahce lead the all-time H2H series by just seven H2H wins (W131, D90, L124), but they have utterly dominated this fixture in recent years when given home advantage. In a sequence spanning back to February 2006, the ‘Sarı Kanaryalar’ (FEN) are unbeaten in 14 home league matches (W9, D5) against Besiktas.
Traditionally, Besiktas like to prioritise self-preservation over scoring when visiting this particular local rival. This is evidenced by the fact that – aside from a freak 3-3 draw here in November 2013 – Besiktas teams have scored less than 1.5 goals on ten of their last 11 visits to Fenerbahce.
The right to brag is up for grabs it seems. Besiktas won the last league derby 2-1, but Fenerbahce were awarded a cup win 3-0 by default in the latest encounter. However, the home fans will be much the more confident here regardless, as five (more than 50%) of Fenerbahce’s nine home league wins over Besiktas – since November 2007 – have been to nil.
Players to watch: Fenerbahce midfielder Andre Ayew scored on his last club appearance before the 15-minute mark, only to take a booking moments later!
Assisted by Álvaro Negredo for both goals, Ricardo Quaresma was at the double in the last league derby, as Besiktas won 3-1.
Stat attack: Against all opponents, and across in all competitions, Fenerbahce have conceded first in four of their last five matches.
Four out of the last six H2H matches have seen Besiktas fail to keep a clean sheet, with both teams scoring.
Each of Fenerbahce’s last six matches not to end level (in all competitions & all opponents) have been settled by a single-goal margin.
