This midweek clash pits two teams that have so far struggled in their start of the new Ligue 1 (L1) campaign against one another. With two points separating them in the table, both will feel capable of going for a win here.
What could have been a promising unbeaten run (W1, D2) ended last weekend, in a 2-1 loss for Nantes at Lille’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Despite having the best average home possession rate in L1 (63%), ‘Les Canaries’ (NAN) are yet to pick up a home win this campaign (D1, L2).
A failure for Nantes to win this one will mark the first time since 1996/97 that a Nantes side has not won any of its first four home L1 matches. However, Nantes’s record against Nice is outstanding, with the ‘Nantais’ winning 22 of 37 previous H2H meetings (W22, D11, L4), and scoring more than three times as many as they have conceded (GF 79, GA 24)!
The ‘Niçois’ (NIC) were on a run of two-straights wins when they suffered their third loss this season, as they went down 1-0 to Montpellier last weekend. Encouragingly for them, they won last season’s corresponding fixture 2-1 – marking their first win on Nantes’ ground in L1 since December 2006.
Players to watch: Emiliano Sala is Nantes’s top scorer with three L1 goals, while Nice’s 21-year-old striker Allan Saint-Maximin has two league goals this season. Both men have scored all their goals in the second-half so far this L1 campaign.
Stat attack: Nice have conceded first in their last seven L1 trips to Nantes, returning a poor record of: W1, D1, L5.
There have been under 2.5 goals (total) scored in six of Nantes’ last seven home L1 fixtures.
Expect cards; the two teams have received the highest combined number of yellow cards in the league (13) this campaign!
