MATCH PREVIEW

Benfica’s Champions League (CL) hopes hang in the balance – they will be all but relegated into the Europa League should they lose again to Ajax, providing Bayern beat AEK.
Primeira Liga runners-up Benfica tasted defeat in their only tournament home game so far (2-0 vs Bayern), with that loss confirming an eight-game losing run in the CL (group stage to final) – a record for any Portuguese side.
The ‘Eagles’ have since beaten AEK to end that run, yet they now come into this game on a three-match losing streak in all competitions – their worst run since 2010/11. The future of manager Rui Vitoriá remains subject of much debate in Lisbon.
These sides faced off in Amsterdam just two weeks ago, when the visitors secured the best start to a CL group stage by a Dutch side since PSV in 2006/07, as Ajax clinched a 92nd minute winner (W2, D1).
Each of Ajax’s last five CL campaigns have ended at the group stage, but that could all be about to change if they can avoid defeat here and maintain their unbeaten record so far. Notably though, Ajax have not won away from home in the CL since 2011/12 (D5, L6 since).
Players to watchEduardo Salvio marked his 250th Benfica appearance in the reverse fixture and has scored 11 goals in 54 European appearances for the Eagles.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has scored two goals in three matches vs Benfica. That was with Schalke (2010/11 CL) and Heerenveen (2004/05 UEFA Cup), but he is yet to score against them with Ajax.
Stat attack: Nervy affair? Nine of Benfica’s last 11 CL fixtures produced under 2.5 goals.
Ajax have won just twice in seven games on Portuguese soil (W2, D1, L4).
Including qualifiers, Ajax have drawn three of their four CL away matches in 2018/19 (W1, D3).
