Two favourites for January’s AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, continue their preparations for that championship with a friendly in Brisbane. With just 11 places separating both in the FIFA rankings, Australia (42nd) and South Korea (53rd) are on a mission to challenge Iran as Asia’s top footballing side.
Life for Australia under new manager Graham Arnold began with a 4-0 away victory to an apathetic Kuwait last month. This friendly clash will be their first home match of 2018, having won all five World Cup home qualifiers played last year, albeit with just one clean sheet.
Similarly, South Korea are rebuilding with a new man in charge after missing the knockout stages in Russia. Contracted through to the 2022 World Cup, Paulo Bento is undefeated during his reign as boss so far (W2, D2), though all four games were home friendlies. The South Koreans scored twice in three of those four matches.
The two regional powerhouses have not met since Australia’s 2-1 extra-time triumph in the 2015 Asian Cup final. The home side on the day has not won any of the four H2Hs prior to that, with two draws and two away wins.
Players to watch: Australia’s Awer Mabil is an exciting prospect enjoying a breakout year. He got a debut goal against Kuwait, and has two goals and two assists in his last appearance for Danish club FC Midtjylland.
Huang Ui-jo (Korea) has scored in six of his last seven appearances for club side Gamba Osaka, and won the Golden Boot at the 2018 Asian Games with nine goals.
Stat attack: Four of Australia’s five friendlies in 2018 produced three or more total goals.
South Korea have led at half-time just once this calendar year in fixtures on foreign soil (D6, L3).
Seven of Australia’s last ten goals have been scored in the second-half.
