Following on from their UEFA Nations League (UNL) exploits, Spain and Bosnia-Herzegovina face off in a friendly clash at the Estadio de Gran Canaria in what will be the Spanish side’s first game there since they hosted Northern Ireland for a Euro 2008 qualifier in November 2007.
Spain’s hopes of making the UNL finals were dealt a potentially fatal blow on Thursday as they lost a five-goal thriller (3-2) in Croatia. Luis Enrique’s side remain top of Group A, League 4 but they now rely on Sunday’s mid-afternoon clash between England and Croatia to end in a draw, the only result that would see them progress to the finals.
Bosnia travel to Gran Canaria in high spirits having sealed promotion to League A of the UNL with a goalless draw away at Austria, which extended their unbeaten run to nine games (W5, D4). They have lost just one of their 11 games since the former Real Madrid and Barcelona midfielder Robert Prosinecki took charge in early January this year.
Spain have never lost to Bosnia in seven previous meetings (W5, D2) – a record stretching back to September 2000 – and haven’t failed to score in any of those matches.
Players to watchÁlvaro Morata, who missed an absolute sitter in the second-half against Croatia, has now failed to find the net in his last three appearances for Spain.
Roma striker Edin Dzeko will look to end a barren spell of five games without a goal for club and country.
Stat attack: Spain will be looking to avoid a third successive defeat for the first time in more than 27 years, following losses against England and Croatia.
Bosnia have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four games. They haven’t conceded more than once in any of their last 12.
Spain are currently on their longest-ever scoring run (29 games).
