Wolves – Manchester City Predictions and Preview

  • Not since the 2004-2005 Championship season have Wolves experienced such a disappointing start to a league campaign. With only one point so far in seven games (one draw and six losses), manager Gary O’Neil is facing intense scrutiny.
  • This poor run of results was highlighted by what O’Neil described as the “worst game” he’s been a part of as a coach. In that match, Wolves lost 5-3 to Brentford, leaving them with much to think about during the international break.
  • If Wolves don’t win again, it would be the longest wait for their first league victory in any season since the 1980s. This is a worrying prospect as they welcome four-time consecutive Premier League champions Manchester City to the stadium.
  • All of Wolves’ home league games have ended in defeat, despite scoring in each one. They are now on the verge of losing four consecutive home league games to start a season for the first time in club history.
  • This unwanted history seems likely, given that City have come here unbeaten in 30 league games (24 wins, 6 draws), their joint-longest run in their league history. Not to mention that City have won seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings here, a positive feeling which may be further boosted by Pep Guardiola squashing rumours of his sensational exit from City during the break.
  • Playing away from home usually causes no issues for City, especially considering that 14 of their current 30-game unbeaten run of league games came on the road (W12, D2). Each of the last seven victories in that sequence came by multi-goal margins, while five also saw them keep a clean sheet. And another rip-roaring success can’t be ruled out, as prior to their shock 2-1 loss here last season, City had scored 11 goals across their three prior Molineux visits.
  • Players to watch: Even if his last four scoring club games ended in defeat, Matheus Cunha could prove influential for Wolves after he assisted the winner in this fixture last season. As for City, Erling Haaland has scored against all 23 sides he’s faced in the Premier League, although his incredible eight-goal haul across four meetings with Wolves makes them his favorite opponents.
  • Hot stat: Manchester City have scored in both halves in five of their seven league games this season, a Premier League high.
