Udinese – Napoli Predictions and Preview

  • This match will be particularly special for Fabio Cannavaro, the new coach of Udinese. As the 2006 FIFA World Champion, he will be facing his hometown and childhood club, Napoli.
  • In the previous round, Cannavaro’s team managed to secure an important point against Bologna, a top-four team, with a 1-1 draw. However, with the Bianconeri starting this round in the relegation zone, two points behind safety, Cannavaro has a challenging task ahead of him in the final four rounds of the Serie A campaign.
  • The Stadio Friuli hasn’t been a fortress for Udinese this season. They have won just once here (D9, L7), and only Salernitana, a team that has already been relegated, has scored fewer home points (12). The struggling club has also lost seven of their nine home games against current top-half sides, setting a record that was worsened in April when they conceded match-deciding goals in the fifth minute of the second half stoppage time against both Roma and Inter (L 2-1).
  • Napoli couldn’t hold onto a 2-1 lead in their Derby del Sole against Roma last weekend. The 2-2 draw extended their winless streak to three Serie A matches (D2, L1), leaving them with a five-point deficit to Lazio, currently in the last European spot. However, the result of the upcoming Coppa Italia final could send ninth-placed Napoli to the UEFA Europa Conference League play-off round.
  • The visitors suffered a disappointing defeat in their last away match against a relegation-threatened opponent, Empoli (L 1-0). This defeat came after club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis left the stands after half-time, adding to their worrying run of only two wins across their last 12 away matches (D3, L7).
  • Players to watch: Lazar Samardžić scored the only goal for Udinese in the reverse fixture (L 4-1). He has scored four of his last six strikes for the club before the break. Victor Osimhen, also from Napoli, scored in that match and now has three goals in his last four outings, all after the break.
  • Hot stat: Napoli were trailing at half-time in their last four away matches. They also conceded the opener within the first ten minutes in their last two such outings.
