Stuttgart – Union Berlin Predictions and Preview

  • Stuttgart’s impressive form from last season is a distant memory now. In their last four Bundesliga games, they have only won once, and that was against struggling Bochum. Their last match, against Bremen last weekend, ended in a 2-2 draw. With this result, they have ten fewer points than they had after 12 matchdays last season.
  • Since October 2023, Stuttgart has not lost at home in the Bundesliga. They have won 12 games and drawn 5, so returning home should give them some comfort after they have earned 11 of their 17 points on their own turf this term. Facing Union Berlin should also be a challenge for Stuttgart, as they won all three competitive home games against them last season, including a 2-0 victory in this particular fixture, which was also played on a Friday night!
  • Union Berlin come into this match on a downer after a winless run of six competitive games (2 draws and 4 losses). Their last defeat, a 2-1 home loss to Leverkusen last weekend, put them in 11th place after 12 rounds (4 wins, 4 draws, 4 losses). Only in four of those wins did Union score first, and considering that seven of their 12 Bundesliga games saw just one or no team score, the importance of the first goal cannot be underestimated.
  • Scoring at all will likely be difficult for Union, who have never scored fewer than the ten goals they have managed so far at this stage of a Bundesliga season. Any respite from these scoring woes is unlikely to come on the road either, as Union have drawn a scoring blank in four of their last five Bundesliga trips.
  • Players to watch:
    * Chris Führich opened the scoring for Stuttgart with his first league goal of the campaign in their last Bundesliga win. However, he closed the scoring in this corresponding fixture last season.
    * Tom Rothe impressed during Union’s only away league win this season with two goal involvements (G1, A1). Five of his seven senior career goals arrived before half-time.
  • Hot stat: Stuttgart have scored a league-high seven Bundesliga home goals after the 75th minute this season.
