Southampton – Liverpool Predictions and Preview

  • Southampton’s return to the Premier League has been a disappointing one. After winning their first league game of the season against Everton, they were quickly defeated 2-0 by Wolves before the international break. This was the Saints’ ninth defeat in the Premier League this season (W1, D1), leaving them at the bottom of the table. Now, they have to face table-topping Liverpool.
  • Another defeat would be ominous for Southampton. The previous seven teams that have suffered at least ten top-flight defeats in their first 12 games have all been relegated. However, history suggests that Southampton has a chance here. They have lost just one of their last eight Premier League home games against the team starting the day atop the table (W2, D5).
  • Liverpool will be hoping for a different trend to continue. The team at the top has beaten the bottom club in 12 of the previous 14 such encounters (D2). Even without the nuanced history, high-flying Liverpool will be extremely confident. They have won 11 of the prior 13 encounters between these teams (D1, L1), seven of which came without reply.
  • The Reds usually come storming back from their respective national duties. They have suffered defeat just twice in their last 26 Premier League games immediately following an international break (W19, D5). Manager Arne Slot would have spent that time heavily preparing for this fixture. Victory here would see him become the joint-fastest manager to reach ten Premier League wins in their career.
  • Players to watch:
    * Adam Armstrong scored the game-winning goal the last time these sides met in the league. He has scored the game-winning goal in three of his last four goalscoring outings.
    * Cody Gakpo was also on target the last time these sides met. Like all six of his club goals this season, his goal came after half-time.
  • Hot stat: Only one of Liverpool’s 11 Premier League games this season has produced more than 3.5 goals.
