Salzburg – Dynamo Kyiv Predictions and Preview

  • Only twice before has Salzburg made it to the league/group stage of the UEFA Champions League after going through the play-off round. However, they are well on their way to making it three times now, having secured a 2-0 victory in the first leg of their tie against Dynamo Kyiv in Lublin last week.
  • New Salzburg boss Pep Lijnders has remained unbeaten since his arrival in the summer, winning six out of seven competitive games across all competitions (D1). With a 100% record (W3) in the early stages of the new Austrian Bundesliga season, Salzburg saw their scheduled league match against Hartberg postponed over the weekend to give them the best chance of progressing into Europe’s premier competition.
  • The odds look good for Lijnders’ side to make it into the Champions League. They have been unbeaten in five of their last seven qualifying ties on home ground (W5, D2), scoring 2+ goals in six of those seven.
  • On the other hand, Dynamo Kyiv has been knocked out of European competitions at this stage in each of the last two seasons. They lost ‘to nil’ in the away leg in both those play-off round ties. The odds don’t get much better for Dynamo, considering that they haven’t made it through the qualification rounds into the league/group stage of the Champions League since the 2020/21 campaign.
  • If Oleksandr Shovkovskyi’s side needs some inspiration, they can take it from the fact that they had won five of their six competitive games before last week’s first-leg defeat (D1). They had also scored 2+ goals in five of those six matches, keeping two clean sheets – both of which came in the away legs of their two previous qualification rounds. This shows that they are resilient on the road.
  • Players to watch: Moussa Yeo has averaged a goal involvement every 51 minutes he’s played across all competitions so far this season for Salzburg (G3, A2). Veteran Andriy Yarmolenko has scored two goals in UEFA Champions League qualifying already this term for Dynamo Kyiv. He has ten career goals in the competition, all of which have come in the first half of games!
  • Hot streak: Salzburg have not kept a clean sheet in eight successive competitive home games, conceding exactly once in five of those.
