Real Madrid – Alaves Predictions and Preview

  • Real Madrid has not been at their best so far this season, but their eight-game unbeaten streak is a sign of their immense strength. They have won six games and drawn two. On Saturday, they came from behind to beat Espanyol 4-1, and their manager, Carlo Ancelotti, was pleased that his team played better than in recent performances.
  • The Italian manager will need to continue this trend, as this clash with Alavés comes days before the latest Madrid derby. This match also takes place a year to the day since Real Madrid last lost in the league, which coincidentally happened against Atlético 38 games ago (W28, D10). You’d have to go back to April 2023 for Los Blancos’ last league defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu (W23, D4). Madrid have won five consecutive home-and-away matches, the last three of which were accompanied by a clean sheet, so there seems little chance of an upset here.
  • However, Alavés won this fixture as recently as November 2020, and their positive start to the season may have instilled some quiet confidence among their travelling fanbase. After beating Sevilla 2-1 at the weekend, Luis García’s men moved onto ten points from their opening six matches (W3, D1, L2) — their most at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 2018/19.
  • They finished comfortably in mid-table that season, just as they did last term. If Alavés are to continue to establish themselves in mid-table, then improving on the road is the next step. Their last ten La Liga away matches have produced just two victories (D2, L6), with five games in that sequence seeing them fail to score — hardly a good omen ahead of a trip to Real Madrid where they’ve conceded eight without response on their last two visits.
  • Players to watch: Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham directly contributed to three of his side’s five goals in a thumping H2H win in May (G1, A2). His goal came inside the opening ten minutes that day, but ten of his last 14 arrived after the break. Alaves’ Nahuel Tenaglia has had a hand in goals in back-to-back matches (G1, A1) — four of his five strikes for the club came in away matches.
