PSG – Toulouse Predictions and Preview
- Although Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is now free from the distraction of Kylian Mbappé, other issues have continued to affect the team during the international break. Reports have suggested that Arsenal is considering hiring Sporting Director Luís Campos to replace Edu, which is not the ideal situation for a crucial week that starts with a match against Toulouse and includes a trip to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
- PSG’s struggles in that competition may lead them to rest their players in this match, as might their six-point lead at the top of the league after the international break. They have achieved this lead through a run of five consecutive Ligue 1 home victories, and their form at the Parc des Princes has been impressive for a long time, with only one loss in the league there since September 2023 (13 wins, 5 draws).
- Ironically, that sole defeat came against Toulouse in May (3-1), with the Violets impressively avoiding defeat in both home-and-away games last season (1 win, 1 draw). The visitors should arrive in Paris full of confidence after a run of three consecutive league wins “to nil,” which has brought them within two points of the European places pre-round.
- Two of those wins came on the road, so Toulouse may be confident they can secure a third set of three consecutive away league victories in 2024. However, their success on this ground last season was their first away win against the Paris giants in the top flight since October 2008, so Carles Martínez Novell’s men are understandably considered big outsiders as they chase back-to-back home-and-away wins.
- Players to watch: PSG’s Kang-in Lee directly contributed to three goals before half-time in his side’s 4-2 destruction of Angers two weeks ago (G2, A1). He also scored against Toulouse in January in the Trophée des Champions. Primed to respond could well be Josh King, who has scored in successive away matches for the Violets, with each strike arriving inside the opening 30 minutes.
- Hot stat: Six of Toulouse’s seven away league goals this season came before half-time.
