PSG – Montpellier Predictions and Preview

PSG’s Successful Start to the Season

  • In their first match of the season, PSG faced Le Havre. The team needed the entire 90 minutes to secure a 4-1 victory, but they made a strong statement with a ten-minute spell of dominance. This display showcased the potential of the team for the upcoming season.
  • After the match, manager Luis Enrique mentioned that his team seemed to slow down a bit after scoring their third goal in the third minute. He will undoubtedly work on this issue ahead of their next match against Montpellier.
  • At the Parc des Princes, where they lifted their 12th Ligue 1 trophy last season, PSG hopes to bring even more joy to their home fans. Despite winning only a slim majority of their league games at home (W9, D6, L2), they were comfortable title winners. Their success rate as a home favorite was only slightly above the league average of 50%.
  • Montpellier was one of the two teams that lost to PSG by a 3+ goal margin twice last season. This contributed to nearly 20% of their goals conceded on the way to their inevitable mid-table finish. Losing to PSG in such a lopsided manner was nothing new for La Paillade, who were on a ten-game losing streak in Ligue 1, conceding an average of 3.8 goals per match during that period.
  • Failing to defeat Strasbourg last weekend (1-1) was a disappointment for the team, particularly as they were unable to score from open play. However, Montpellier proved themselves capable of upsets away from home last season, winning at top-six outfits Lyon (4-1) and Nice (2-1). Nevertheless, their dreadful record in this match suggests they’ll need their best performance in years to win it.

Players to Watch:

  • Lee Kang-in, who delivered PSG’s season opener last week, has fond memories of this opponent. He scored in both Ligue 1 H2Hs last season.
  • Montpellier captain Téji Savanier was one of their two scorers in a 6-2 loss to PSG in the previous campaign. Last weekend, he completed his tenth goalscoring appearance for the club since the start of last season.

Hot Stat:

  • 65% of PSG’s Ligue 1 home matches last season produced over 3.5 total goals.
