Nice – St Etienne Predictions and Preview

  • Having finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season, Nice would have hoped for a quick start to life under their new coach, Franck Haise. However, their performance has been somewhat disappointing so far. They have won just one of their first four games this season (one draw, two losses), despite scoring first in all but one of them.
  • The team has not been able to keep a clean sheet this season, which is a clear area for improvement. So far, they have given up the lead quickly, and they have not been able to equalize after falling behind. This highlights the importance of attacking and creating goals for the team.
  • With the start of their UEFA Europa League campaign after this clash against St. Etienne, Nice will be eager to build positive momentum. They have a good record of only one defeat in their last seven home games (four wins, two draws).
  • Last season, they were promoted through the play-offs. However, they started their first top-flight campaign since 2021/22 in the worst possible way. They lost their opening three league games without scoring a single goal! They did score their first goal and win with a surprise 1-0 victory against Lille on matchday four, but they still remain the lowest scorers in the division thanks to that solitary goal.
  • On the back of that win, they head to the Allianz Riviera on Friday night hoping to achieve back-to-back top-flight wins for the first time since February 2022. One positive sign for their quest is that manager Olivier Dall’Oglio has lost just one of his last eight games against Nice (four wins, three draws). During his playing days, he also lost just two of eight games against Les Aiglons (three wins, three draws).

Players to watch:

  • Nice defender Jonathan Clauss is unbeaten in four league games against St Etienne, recording an assist in each of his last two such meetings.
Summer signing Pierre Cornud has been booked in each of St Etienne’s last two matches, with four of his last six club appearances ending with his name in the referee’s notebook.

Hot stat:

  • Nice have won just three of their nine league home games so far in 2024 (two draws, four losses), scoring 2+ goals only twice.
