Nice – Rennes Predictions and Preview
- After a short break for Christmas and New Year, Ligue 1 is back with a clash between Nice and Rennes, two teams with very different seasons. Nice are currently in sixth place, having lost only once in their last 11 league matches (five wins and five draws).
- It’s hard to imagine Nice losing again on home soil. They are unbeaten in Ligue 1 this season with four wins and three draws, making them one of only two teams, along with PSG, to boast such a record. These games have been full of entertainment: in six of them, both teams scored, while the only one without goals was Nice’s famous 8-0 drubbing of Saint-Étienne.
- Rennes, on the other hand, have struggled this season, sitting in the bottom half and five points from the relegation zone. However, things have improved markedly since Jorge Sampaoli took over as manager. Under his guidance, Rennes have won two of their four league games (one loss) and have been able to stay out of immediate danger. But with this being the first of three consecutive games against top-six sides, they can’t afford to rest easy just yet.
- This is especially true given their poor away league form. The Red and Blacks have lost seven of their last eight away games (one draw), the last three of which were without reply. With a record of just two wins from their last 13 Ligue 1 away games held on a Friday (four draws and seven losses) – two of which came against Nice (one draw and one loss) – history suggests their away struggles will continue here.
- Players to watch:
- * Badredine Bouanani has scored in consecutive league games for Nice, both of which were his team’s second goal of the day.
* Lorenz Assignon, also scoring in back-to-back matches for Rennes, has seen four of his five goals arrive after the 70th minute. - Hot stat:
- Rennes’ one first-half away goal this term is a joint-league low.
