Netherlands – Turkey Predictions and Preview

  • After reaching the last 16 in the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, the Netherlands showed their potential to win the trophy on July 14th. They defeated Romania 3-0 in Munich, demonstrating their outstanding performance.
  • Manager Ronald Koeman emphasized that the team’s performance was exceptional. Not only did they score at least three goals in a match for the fourth time this year, but they also kept their eighth clean sheet in the last 11 international games.
  • Next up for the Netherlands is a match against Turkey. Turkey has lost only one of the last four matches against the Netherlands (W2, D1). In the last Euro qualifiers, Turkey earned four points against the Netherlands, ultimately costing them a place at the 2016 tournament. However, under Koeman’s predecessor Louis van Gaal, the Netherlands won the last such meeting 6-1 on their way to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Memphis Depay and Donyell Malen, both key members of the current squad, scored four goals between them.
  • Intriguingly, only Spain and Germany have scored more often than Turkey among the remaining teams in the tournament. However, with one of those two sides guaranteed not to make the semifinals, the Crescent Stars will have a chance to outgun anyone after securing a 2-1 victory over Austria on Tuesday. The quickest goal in Euros knockout history was scored by now-suspended defender Merih Demiral, who opened the scoring for Turkey after just 57 seconds!
  • Despite their attacking capabilities, Turkey is susceptible defensively. They are the only country left in the tournament to have both conceded in their first four games. These matches have featured at least three goals, providing entertainment that has made them a favorite among many fans.
  • Players to watch include Malen, who scored his first ever Netherlands brace in the last round. Four of his nine international strikes came in 2024, building on a successful season at Borussia Dortmund. Looking to outshine him will be Turkey wonderkid Arda Güler. He provided the assist for Demiral’s second headed goal against Austria and has either registered a goal contribution or been booked in six of his last eight appearances for club and country.
  • Hot stat: Each of Turkey’s last five matches has seen at least three cards distributed.
