Midtjylland – Slovan Bratislava Predictions and Preview

  • After knocking out UE Santa Coloma and Ferencváros in the previous UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds, Midtjylland will host Slovan Bratislava in the first leg of the play-off round on Wednesday. The Danish Superliga champions are aiming to extend their unbeaten home record to nine games across all competitions, including four victories and four clean sheets this season.
  • Midtjylland has a strong record at the MCH Arena in European competitions, with only two defeats from their last 14 outings. However, they have a weak away record in Europe, with just one win from their last 13 away matches. Therefore, they will be keen to take any advantage to Slovakia ahead of next week’s second leg.
  • Slovan, on the other hand, has no such away-day issues and will make the long journey north with an unbeaten European away record this campaign. They will once again attempt to qualify for the UCL for the first time in their history. This is the closest they have come since a play-off defeat in 2014. If they could mark their eighth competitive fixture in Denmark with their first victory, a huge step towards their goal would have been taken.
  • A 2-1 home win over Košice on Saturday evening continued a fine start to the season for Slovan, who are the only team with a 100% record intact and sit top of the division. They have won five out of five at home across all competitions this season, so anything other than a heavy defeat in the first leg should see them confident of progression.
  • Players to watch:
  • Midtjylland keeper Elías Rafn Ólafsson spent last season out on loan but has already kept three clean sheets in this season’s UCL and is yet to concede at home since his return. He’ll likely face forward David Strelec, who scored Slovan’s opener on Saturday. Strelec has been in red-hot form in UCL games this season (G3, A3).
  • Hot stat: Both teams won 2-1 with injury-time winners in their domestic fixtures this weekend.
