Marseille – Angers Predictions and Preview
- Marseille had a fantastic start to the season, going unbeaten in their first five Ligue 1 games. However, they lost their sixth match, 1-0 to Strasbourg, which was a real shock for the team. It was a particularly difficult loss for the Olympians as they had been unbeaten in that match-up at home since 2005.
- Roberto De Zerbi, the coach, was probably the most disappointed because they kept all 11 players on the pitch, which they hadn’t done in their previous two victories against Nice and Lyon.
- Marseille will be eager to bounce back when they return to the Stade Vélodrome, where they have lost just once in their last 25 matches (W15, D9). A victory against Angers would see them climb into the top two in Ligue 1. This seems very likely if they can continue their recent trend of scoring at least twice in their last five home league matches.
- Angers are at the bottom of the table, holding the Ligue 1 standings after a 3-1 defeat to Reims last week. With only two points from six matches, this is their joint-worst start after half a dozen Ligue 1 matches in their history. It mirrors their 2022-23 campaign, in which they were eventually relegated.
- The Black and Whites did go on to win their seventh game that season, a 2-1 win over Montpellier. However, this feat is unlikely to be repeated here since they have won just one of their last 31 away top-flight matches (D7, L23). Their record against Marseille is also cause for concern, with Angers failing to beat their hosts in 14 of the last 15 match-ups (D7, L7).
- Players to watch: Elye Wahi, a player from Marseille, has scored five goals in his last five matches, all of which were either the first or the last goal of the game. The away side’s best hope may lie with Zinedine Ferhat, who has scored five of his last seven goals on the road and has found the net against Marseille once before.
- Hot stat: Marseille have scored the same amount of goals in each half in eight of their last ten Ligue 1 home matches.
