Manchester Utd – Fulham Predictions and Preview
- Manchester United may have started their season with a defeat after losing the Community Shield to Manchester City on penalties, but there is still a lot of optimism around Old Trafford as their Premier League campaign begins.
- A positive transfer window has continued, with Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui set to join the team from Bayern Munich this week. This will add to the group of players Erik ten Hag coached at Ajax.
- For the eighth consecutive season, United will open their season at home (W5, L2). Ten Hag will be eager to add another victory to this record after overseeing a disappointing 2023-24 season. The Red Devils had 14 league defeats, which is their highest total since 1989-90. One of these defeats came on this ground against Fulham, their opening-day opponents (2-1). This ended an 18-match unbeaten home-and-away record (W15, D3).
- Fulham’s victory at Old Trafford in October 2003 (W14, D2) was their first at this stadium. This result helped them finish in the middle of the table in their second season after returning to the top flight. Marco Silva’s team has lost the experience of tenured captain Tim Ream and midfield destroyer João Palhinha over the summer. However, the addition of Emile Smith Rowe from Arsenal has excited Cottagers fans ahead of the new season.
- Fulham has avoided defeat on the opening day in both seasons since their latest promotion (W1, D1). However, there will certainly be trepidation among the travelling fans given their poor record at Old Trafford. Confidence may not come from within the dugout either, as Silva has lost more games against Manchester City (11) as a manager than against United (W3, D1, L7).
- Players to watch: Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho scored in the Community Shield last week, the fifth of his last eight scoring appearances. Alex Iwobi has shown he can score late for the Red Devils, scoring the winner in the 97th minute of last season’s corresponding fixture.
- Hot stat: Both teams have scored in four of the five head-to-head matches between these sides since Ten Hag’s appointment at Manchester United.
