Mainz – Dortmund Predictions and Preview
- Bo Henriksen arrived at Mainz in February and immediately started working wonders. He guided the team to safety, but so far this season, they haven’t reached the same heights. They are just two points above the relegation zone and have won only twice in the league (four draws, three losses). They are also winless in three games against teams from the same league (two draws, one loss).
- Mainz has never waited longer for a Bundesliga win with Henriksen in charge, but now that record seems to be under threat. Their Achilles’ heel so far has been a dismal home record. They have not won any of their first five league games at the Mewa Arena this season (two draws, three losses). Only the bottom-placed Bochum (one) has picked up fewer points on home soil than the two they’ve managed.
- Interestingly, this weekend’s visitors, Dortmund, remain winless on their travels in the league this term (one draw, three losses). This is their worst start to a Bundesliga campaign on the road since the 1989/90 season! However, Dortmund’s perfect home form has proven enough to keep them in the mix for the European spots in the early stages of the season. A positive result here could see them break into the top four.
- Nuri Şahin’s team will be well aware of the threat posed by Mainz. They have not won any of the last three games against them (two draws, one loss), including the draw which cost them the league title on the final day of the 2022/23 season. They lost the most recent meeting 3-0 back in May, before Şahin’s summer appointment. The positive omen is that Dortmund have never lost back-to-back Bundesliga H2Hs.
- Serhou Guirassy has 16 goal involvements (13 goals, 3 assists) in 14 appearances for club and country so far this season. Four of his five Bundesliga strikes this term came in the second half. Jonathan Burkardt’s return to fitness will be timely for Mainz. He has scored five goals in his last eight appearances, and they remain unbeaten when he scores this season.
- Dortmund head coach Nuri Şahin won seven of his last nine games against Mainz as a player (one draw, one loss).
