Lille – Lyon Predictions and Preview

  • The main event of the weekend in Ligue 1 takes place on Friday night, as Lille and Lyon meet in a showdown. Both teams are in a race to reach the top three.
  • Lille has been unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions, with five wins and two draws. Their winning streak includes a famous victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, so it’s not surprising that they come into this game as favourites.
  • Last week, Lille became the first Ligue 1 team in over a decade to open the scoring in the second half stoppage time and win by multiple goals against Lens (2-0). The Stade Pierre-Mauroy faithful will hope they can repeat that achievement earlier this week. However, Lyon is actually the last team other than PSG to defeat Lille on their own turf (W5, D2).
  • This was a 4-3 victory back in May, which is part of a recent record in this fixture where Lyon has lost just one of the last six home-and-away games (W4, D1). Les Gones have also avoided defeat on seven of their last eight trips to Lille (W2, D5). Pierre Sage would be grateful for an extension to that record after a tough week for his side.
  • Lyon followed up a defeat to Beşiktaş in the UEFA Europa League by drawing with newly-promoted Auxerre (2-2). With both of those disappointments coming on home soil, perhaps they’ll be pleased to be back on the road where they’ve won their last three matches while scoring ten total goals!
  • Players to watch:
  • Lille talisman Jonathan David has scored nine times in his last eight games for club and country. He looks set to improve on that against one of his favourite opponents. Only against Strasbourg (eight) and Nantes (seven) has he netted more often than Lyon (six).
  • Amongst an array of attacking talent, Georges Mikautadze staked his claim for a start by scoring both his side’s goals against Auxerre last week. He was also on target the last time he faced Lille.
  • Hot stat: Both teams scored in five of the last seven home-and-away games on this ground.
