Lecce – Empoli Predictions and Preview

  • After a rare triumph over Verona in their most recent home game, Lecce reverted to their old ways last weekend, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Bologna, their fifth loss in six Serie A matches. This is one of the reasons why Luca Gotti’s team currently find themselves in the bottom three.
  • Another issue is their porous defense, which has already conceded 20 league goals this season. This is a cause for concern, as the last time Lecce conceded 20 or more goals at this stage of a Serie A season was in 2019/20, a season that ended in relegation!
  • This weakness has also affected their home stadium, Stadio Via del Mare, where Lecce have conceded at least twice in three of their last four home matches, including a disastrous 6-0 defeat to Fiorentina.
  • However, Empoli’s arrival could be a turning point. The Tuscany-based side has scored the joint-second fewest league goals so far, with just eight strikes. Despite their struggles, they halted their five-game winless streak on Monday evening, defeating Como 1-0. This was the first time in six home matches that they found the net!
  • Interestingly, Empoli does not seem to have the same problems on the road. They have now scored in seven consecutive away matches, a streak that helped them avoid defeat in all but one of those games (W3, D3, L1). They last racked up such a scoring streak between October 2021 and January 2022, when they found the net in ten consecutive away outings, and they will be eager to continue this form here, aiming for their first victory at this venue since 2006 (D2, L2).
  • Players to watch: Ante Rebić, who is yet to score a goal this season, could strike late. Five of his last six competitive goals have come after the hour mark. After scoring against Como, each of Pietro Pellegri’s last six goals have come after the break and in victories.
  • Hot stat: Lecce have conceded a league-high seven goals inside the 31st-45th minute period this Serie A season.
