Ireland – England Predictions and Preview
- The start of the 2024/2025 UEFA Nations League marks a new chapter for both Ireland and England. Both teams have appointed new managers ahead of their match on the British Isles.
- In Ireland, Heimir Hallgrímsson, the Icelandic coach, is leading the team. He gained fame when he coached Iceland and they eliminated England from Euro 2016. Just days after the English team was knocked out of Europe due to the Brexit vote, Ireland showed their strength.
- Fast forward to the present, and the former dentist is now responsible for turning Irish fortunes around. Ireland has been stagnating on the international stage, and most of their wins in the last couple of years have been against smaller nations like Malta, Gibraltar, and Armenia. They have only won six games, drawn two, and lost ten.
- For Ireland, things could get worse before they get better. They have failed to defeat England in any of the last seven meetings, with six of them ending in a draw.
- England’s new beginning begins with Gareth Southgate leaving his position after their defeat in the European Championships final this summer. Lee Carsley, the former U21 boss, takes the reins for the first time against the nation he represented as a player 40 times during his career. He was also in talks with the Irish FA before Hallgrímsson’s appointment.
- The Three Lions are preparing for their first season in League B after failing to win a game in their League A campaign of 2022/23. This means they will have to wait until the next campaign to challenge for their first finals appearance since 2019. However, they are confident of an immediate return to the top flight, given that they are ranked at least 50 places higher than any other Group B2 side by FIFA.
- Players to watch: Sammie Szmodics could make his first competitive international appearance for Ireland after his impressive season with Blackburn earned him a move to the Premier League. In eight of his last nine scoring appearances, he netted his team’s opener.
- For England, Eberiche Eze made a late attempt to secure some international minutes with his goal against Chelsea last weekend. It was his fifth straight goal after the half-time break.
- Hot stat: England scored just once in their last five UEFA Nations League away games. They drew two and lost three.
