Everton – Tottenham Predictions and Preview

  • David Moyes’return to Everton didn’t go as planned on Wednesday night, as the team lost a close match 1-0 at home to Aston Villa. This result left the Blues just one point above the relegation zone at the end of the game, extending their dismal run to just one win in 12 Premier League matches (D6, L5).
  • The last three league games in that sequence all ended in defeat without scoring a single goal, highlighting again that the Toffees’ misfiring attack will be a serious concern for the returning Moyes. The severity of their attacking woes is emphasized by the fact they are now just one of four teams in Premier League history to have failed to score in 12 or more games from their opening 20.
  • A boost for Everton, at first glance at least, might be that their next game comes against Tottenham Hotspur, a team with seven defeats in their past 11 league games, including a loss to their biggest rivals Arsenal on Wednesday night (2-1). That defeat means Spurs start this round closer to the bottom three rather than the top four, and manager Ange Postecoglou is reportedly close to being sacked.
  • Wednesday’s painful setback was Tottenham’s 11th defeat of the league campaign, which is their joint-most at this stage of a single season in Premier League history. Yet perhaps their H2H record at Goodison Park can boost confidence, with none of their last 11 away league visits ending in defeat (W3, D8). Another win would see them do the double over the Toffees for the first time since 2017/18.
  • Players to watch: Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite scored a late equaliser in this fixture last season (2-2), but has been attracting attention for the wrong reasons more recently with three yellow cards in his past four league appearances. Former Toffee Richarlison made his return from injury for Spurs as a second-half substitute against Arsenal and haunted his former club last season with a brace at Goodison Park in that aforementioned stalemate.
  • Hot stat: Tottenham have lost eight of their 31 Premier League games under Ange Postecoglou when they’ve scored the first goal (26%) – the highest percentage of any permanent Spurs manager.
