AS Roma – Genoa Predictions and Preview

  • The Claudio Ranieri revolution at Roma is in full swing. After a 2-2 draw with Bologna at the weekend, the Gialorossi have extended their current unbeaten run to five matches across all competitions (3 wins, 2 draws). This is their longest such run since March, and it has helped lift the capital club into the top half of the Serie A table. However, they are still eight points behind the top six teams ahead of the weekend.
  • If Roma want to close that gap, their recent formidable home form will likely be crucial. They have won five consecutive matches at the Stadio Olimpico, their best such streak since a run of six consecutive victories back in April. Ranieri also has history on his side against Genoa. A win would mean that he would have won against no other team as a manager in two consecutive home games (currently 13 wins).
  • Such a record could strike fear into Genoa, who might already be sweating over the prospect of a trip to the Stadio Olimpico. They have not beaten Roma since 1990 (4 draws, 20 losses)! The visitors are only one point behind their hosts thanks to a three-game unbeaten run since Christmas (2 wins, 1 draw). However, due to the tight nature of Serie A, they are also just five points clear of the relegation zone.
  • Their upturn in form has coincided with the arrival of Patrick Vieira, who has lost just one of his eight games in charge (3 wins, 4 draws). With their team conceding just once in their last five away league games, a solid defensive foundation could help them to success in Rome. They should fancy their chances of doing so too, as their points per game average on the road (1.56) is almost twice as much as their home return (0.82).
  • Players to watch: Roma’s Alexis Saelemaekers has scored in back-to-back appearances for the first time since April. He remains unbeaten when finding the net at senior club level (15 wins, 5 draws). Genoa’s Mattia Bani is one of few visiting players to win away at Roma from when he was at Bologna. He has played every minute of his side’s last eight matches and helped them to five clean sheets.
  • Hot stat: Only two of Genoa’s nine away league games this season have seen both teams score, a joint-low for the division.
