Eintracht Frankfurt – RFS Predictions and Preview
- Eintracht Frankfurt, one of the few teams to go unbeaten in the first two matches of the UEFA Europa League (UEL), has had a decent start to this tournament and the season overall, despite a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. This defeat was their first in any competition since late August, after a run of five wins and two draws. They have now played 15 UEL games without defeat, winning nine and drawing six.
- As the Eagles prepare for their first ever meeting with RFS from Latvia, this will also be their first home-and-home match against Latvian opposition. They will start as heavy favourites, having won two and drawn five in their previous seven home matches in this competition. These results include victories over top teams such as Barcelona, Real Betis, and West Ham.
- RFS has faced a tough baptism of fire in the UEL. They were defeated 4-1 by FCSB on matchday one, but then drew 2-2 with Galatasaray on matchday two, especially after going 2-0 down. Fans can look forward to more success next season as they are already guaranteed European football. However, they will also be aiming for a domestic league title as they sit six points clear atop the Virsliga with three rounds remaining.
- Having only ever won two UEL away games in regulation time (and lost three), this promises to be a tough assignment for the reigning Latvian champions. They were fully established in 2005 and first played in Europe in 2019/20. This is their first continental trip to Germany, and indeed, the first for any Latvian side since Ventspils played Hertha Berlin in September 2009 (drawing 1-1).
- Players to watch: Both of Junior Dina Ebimbe’s goals for Frankfurt this season came in this competition, and both were also his team’s second goals of the game. Jānis Ikaunieks has scored six times in RFS’s last four games, opening the scoring before half-time in each of their last three.
- Hot streak: German teams have been unbeaten in their last eight European fixtures against Latvian opposition (winning seven and drawing one).
