Crystal Palace – Southampton Predictions and Preview

  • Despite being in danger of dropping out of the Premier League during the festive period, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is confident in his team. In their last seven league games, they have only lost once, drawing four times and winning twice. On Boxing Day, they drew 0-0 against Bournemouth and will now look to take the three points to end the 2024 season as they welcome bottom-of-the-table Southampton.
  • Palace has often finished the year on a high note. Since 2018, they have not lost a year-ending Premier League game (3 wins, 2 draws). All three victories came in the last three years, with multi-goal margins. To continue this trend, Glasner’s team must end a four-game home league winless run (2 draws, 2 losses). However, all the teams they faced during that run were in the top half of the table.
  • Southampton is nine points behind safety ahead of this round. Their hopes of becoming just the fifth team to avoid the drop after sitting bottom over Christmas seem quite unlikely after their first game under Ivan Jurić ended in a 1-0 defeat against West Ham. Despite the defeat, the Croatian coach remained positive about the Saints’ chances of survival. He felt his team was “better” on the day.
  • Despite the apparent positivity in the dressing room, it seems like a big ask to close the yawning gap to safety away from home. Southampton’s last Premier League away win was in February 2023 (4 draws, 12 losses). Failing to score in four of their last five league trips, they will at least hope to improve on that return at a ground where they have scored in five of the last seven away H2Hs (4 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses).
  • Players to watch: Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored the match opener in his last three games. Another goal here would secure his longest run of consecutive openers since 2017/18. For Southampton, Paul Onuachu, a 6-foot-7-inch Nigerian, made his second league start of the season during Jurić’s debut. The towering Nigerian has scored the opener in his last four appearances.
  • Hot stat: Southampton failed to win their last four year-ending Premier League games, which were all against London sides (3 draws, 1 loss).
