Chelsea – West Ham Predictions and Preview

  • In midweek, Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea team improved their chances of success in European competitions by defeating Tottenham 2-0. This was their sixth win out of 11 Premier League London derbies this season, with a record of W6, D2, and L3.
  • Their final London derby of the season will be against West Ham. The Blues are aiming for their first back-to-back league victories after a three-game winning streak over the festive period, two of which were against London teams.
  • Chelsea has been almost perfect in their last seven games at Stamford Bridge, with a record of W6 and D1. Their goal-scoring rate of 24 goals in that period is sure to strike fear into West Ham’s hearts. However, scoring first may not guarantee success in this match, as the team that scores first in this Premier League head-to-head has gone on to lose ten times.
  • West Ham, on the other hand, has been struggling in both European and league competitions. They were eliminated from the Europa League and experienced a five-game winless run in all competitions, with a record of D2 and L3. The run was at least bookended by a confidence-boosting 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Under-fire boss David Moyes now needs a win for West Ham to retain their hopes of a top seven finish.
  • In the reverse match, West Ham stunned Chelsea 3-1. They have an opportunity to win their third Premier League double against the Blues, which would be their first since 2019-20. However, their record in away London derbies this term suggests that it won’t be easy (W2, L3). All three defeats saw them concede at least three goals. However, their two victories in such games this season came in arguably their two toughest trips against Tottenham and Arsenal.
  • Key battle: Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah scored the first goal in midweek, making him the unlikely hero. He will perhaps be more concerned with stopping Jarrod Bowen, who in the previous round became West Ham’s first player in 19 years to hit 20 competitive goals in one season.
  • Hot streak: West Ham has gone 15 Premier League games without a clean sheet, their longest such run since 2008.
