Chelsea – Aston Villa Predictions and Preview
- Chelsea achieved another victory in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday, defeating Heidenheim 2-0 at their home ground. This win keeps them as one of only two teams in the competition with a perfect record.
- Now, the Blues aim to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to six games. However, just nine of their 22 Premier League points have come at Stamford Bridge so far, which is the lowest ratio in the division.
- This highlights that Enzo Maresca’s team has not always played their best in front of their own fans this season. Part of the reason for this can be attributed to a leaky defense that has yet to keep a clean sheet in their opening six home league matches. This is the longest wait for a home league clean sheet since the 1978/79 season!
- Next up is Aston Villa, who have been on a tricky run of form. They have not won a competitive match since a 2-0 Champions League victory over Bologna back in mid-October (D3, L4). Exclusively in the Premier League, it’s no win in four for Villa (D2, L2). This could mean they go without a victory in five consecutive league games for the first time under Unai Emery.
- Despite this, Villa did come from behind to rescue a point at home to Crystal Palace last week (2-2). They followed it up with a 0-0 draw against Serie A giants Juventus on Wednesday in the Champions League. So, there are signs they’re getting back on track. Confidence can also be taken from the fact the Midlands club are undefeated in 90 minutes across each of their past four competitive trips to Stamford Bridge (W2, D2).
- Players to watch: Coming into this weekend’s games, only Chris Wood (six) has scored the opening goal in more different games than Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson (five) in the Premier League this season. For Aston Villa, Ollie Watkins has scored the winning goal in each of his last two Premier League away games against Chelsea.
- Hot streak: Chelsea have scored on or beyond the 70th minute in five straight competitive matches.
