Cagliari – Verona Predictions and Preview
- Last weekend, Cagliari earned a 2-2 draw after a penalty in the 85th minute. However, it didn’t stop their winless streak (two draws and three losses). They are currently only a point above the relegation zone, and if they win against Hellas Verona, they could move up to the top 12. This should be enough motivation for them to try and win their first top-flight home game in five months.
- Cagliari’s last victory came in a home game, and they hope to repeat that at the Unipol Domus. They have lost just once in their last four games there (two wins and one draw). Four of those points came in the league against Torino (3-2) and Milan (3-3). On both occasions, they had to fight back from deficits, highlighting their fighting spirit, which could be helpful for them this season.
- Verona lost 5-0 to Inter last weekend, all the goals being conceded within 41 minutes. This was their fifth defeat in six games (one win), which could make it a long fight to extend their six-season stay in the top flight. Worryingly for the visitors, their defensive lapses have been a problem. They have conceded 32 goals, at least seven more than any other team in this league campaign!
- The Yellow and Blues have lost their previous five league trips, but they hope to turn things around. They come here with a 50% winning record in away top-flight home games (18 points, 9 wins). Even a point would be welcome, as this is Verona’s joint-worst losing run on the road since a run of eight away Serie A defeats in the 2017/18 season, which ominously led to their relegation.
- Players to watch: Cagliari’s Roberto Piccoli could come up late in the game. Eight of his last 11 Serie A goals have come after the 80th minute, including their last goal to earn a point against Genoa. Verona ‘keeper Lorenzo Montipò could try to stop him. He hasn’t kept a clean sheet in his last nine league games, but he has two in his last four personal home games.
- Hot stat: Verona conceded first in seven of their last nine away league games.
