Bulgaria – Luxembourg Predictions and Preview

  • The UEFA Nations League (UNL) group stage action continues with Bulgaria hosting Luxembourg. Since Ilian Iliev took over as coach in November 2023, the Bulgarians have been on an impressive run, with an unbeaten streak of eight games (two wins and six draws). In their most recent two games in Group C3, they have scored four points, placing them level on points with Belarus at the top of the standings.
  • However, this statistic is slightly misleading. Bulgaria’s 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland last time out was their first competitive win since September 2022! They will be hoping that their star player and captain Kiril Despodov can help turn a series of draws into wins to top the group and qualify for League B, a level they last reached in 2020/21.
  • Things are not as promising for Luxembourg. They will travel to the City of the Seven Hills with a mountain to climb after starting their UNL campaign with back-to-back defeats. These losses have put them bottom of the group and on a four-game losing streak overall, putting them in real danger of being demoted to the lowest of the groups, League D, which they haven’t featured in since 2018/19.
  • Having failed to find the back of the net in any of those defeats means goals will be a top priority as Luxembourg attempts to recreate their form from before those losses, when they lost only one of their seven UNL matches (three wins and three draws). But they will need to make history if they want to win here. Their dreadful head-to-head record of zero wins from 15 games (two draws and 13 losses) is also the most times they have faced an opponent without triumphing in their history!
  • Players to watch: Despodov will be the player to watch after his winning goal in Bulgaria’s victory over Northern Ireland. Don’t expect his six-match run without a goal contribution to last much longer, as it’s his longest such run since March. Danel Sinani is Luxembourg’s all-action man. In his last five appearances for the national side (including friendlies), he has grabbed two goal contributions (one goal and one assist) and a red card!
  • Hot stat: Including friendlies, three of just six goals Bulgaria have conceded in their last eight games have arrived before the 17th minute!
