Bournemouth – Southampton Predictions and Preview
- In the first South Coast derby of the season, Bournemouth will host Southampton. The Cherries are coming into this match after two consecutive Premier League defeats. Both those defeats were without scoring goals, but they haven’t lost three consecutive top-flight games without scoring since the end of the 2022/23 season. Therefore, we should expect a rebound, at least in terms of goals.
- Bournemouth have yet to win at home in the league this season (D1, L1). They may be worried that this run could continue, as they haven’t won at home in the league since March 2016 (D2, L4). The last four games in that home run saw them draw a scoring blank. However, they have a respectable league record at the Vitality Stadium stretching back into last season (W4, D3, L2), scoring in all but one of those games. They will be hoping to break a couple of negative streaks here.
- Southampton also have a streak to break. They are winless in the league this season (D1, L4). Last week, only a late Ipswich goal denied them a first Premier League win of the season, forcing them to settle for a 1-1 draw. After the match, boss Russell Martin said he was “angry and disappointed”. However, he insists his team is “getting better” with each passing game, and he believes that first win is around the corner.
- Winning away in the top flight has been a long-standing issue for Southampton. They have emerged victorious in none of their last nine Premier League road trips (D2, L7). Ending that streak against a side that Martin has never beaten in a managerial home game (D1, L2) could be difficult. Perhaps the most concerning aspect is that his team has conceded three or more times in each of those three games.
- Players to watch: Evanilson, a big-money summer signing, is still waiting to open his Bournemouth account. If he scores here, it may be early, as six of his last seven club goals came before the hour mark. Eighteen-year-old Tyler Dibling has caught the eye since coming into the Southampton side and scoring his first goal for the club against Ipswich. His recent performances have reportedly attracted interest from Manchester United.
- Hot stat: The designated home team has failed to score in five of the last seven home games.
