Aston Villa – Southampton Predictions and Preview

  • After going winless for a record eight games (three draws and five losses), Aston Villa finally ended that negative run with a 3-1 victory against Brentford in the middle of the week. Now, they are looking to get back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since September when they travel to the Midlands to face Southampton, who are at the bottom of the table. Despite their recent dip in form, Villa haven’t lost in six league games at Villa Park so far (three wins and three draws).
  • Aston Villa’s four wins in their last five home games against Southampton (one loss) make them the clear favourites for this clash. Unai Emery, their boss, will be eager to get the job done without any fuss. This is because they have a crucial UEFA Champions League game against RB Leipzig three days after this one, which is a must-win for Villa if they want to advance straight to the last 16.
  • Russell Martin, the Southampton manager, will be hoping that Emery will make changes to his team with that in mind. However, Martin is under pressure himself. The Saints are at the foot of the table and now seven points away from safety after their 5-1 defeat to Chelsea in the middle of the week. The angry St Mary’s faithful booed their team off at full-time, despite Martin claiming he was “proud” of his players.
  • In fact, there’s been very little to be proud of in Southampton’s performances this season. Their five points after 14 games (one win, two draws, and 11 losses) are the joint-second lowest return of any side in Premier League history. And things are unlikely to get much better on the road for a Saints side that has lost six of their seven travelling league games this term (one draw).
  • Players to watch: Of the seven goals Morgan Rogers has scored since joining Aston Villa, six have come in the first half, including his strike in the middle of the week. Cameron Archer, the Southampton player, returns to Villa Park with a point to prove. He opened the scoring on this ground last season while playing for Sheffield United, though only two of his six top-flight scoring appearances ended in victory (two draws, two losses).
  • Hot stat: Southampton are the only team yet to score a first-half Premier League away goal this season.
