Arsenal – PSG Predictions and Preview
- Late goals have become a theme of Arsenal’s season. They conceded a late goal in a pulsating draw with title rivals Manchester City, and then scored two goals themselves to defeat Leicester on Saturday (W 4-2). Mikel Arteta will be looking to build on this positive momentum in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and build on a 0-0 draw with Atalanta on matchday one. That contest was memorable for David Raya’s incredible double save, which kept the Gunners level-headed.
- Arsenal are unbeaten at the Emirates Stadium since January (W12, D2). They’ve also lost just one of their last seven home matches against Ligue 1 opposition (W4, D2). This includes a thumping 6-0 win over Lens here last term — the biggest victory by an English side against a French counterpart. However, their shooting boots have since deserted them in the UCL, blanking in back-to-back matches in this competition — never previously have they done so in three in a row.
- Paris Saint-Germain may be the prime opponents to buck that trend against. Luis Enrique’s men have managed just two clean sheets this season, but the French champions remain unbeaten regardless (W6, D1). Unlike their hosts here, the Parisians were victorious on matchday one, scoring late to beat Girona to pick up what could be a priceless three points, given that they’ve lost each of their last three trips to England.
- In fact, PSG have never beaten Arsenal in four previous head-to-head meetings (D3, L1) — the most they’ve faced a side in Europe without winning. And as each of their last four away defeats in any competition have come in the UCL, a tough night could be in store for Enrique’s side.
- Key battle: All four of Bukayo Saka’s UCL goals for Arsenal came on home soil, with three of those arriving inside the opening 23 minutes. Marshalling Saka will likely be PSG left-back Nuno Mendes, who played a pivotal role in the own goal that earned them victory on matchday one. Four of his five senior strikes came on the road, with the three he netted for PSG coming beyond the hour.
- Hot stat: Mikel Arteta will be the sixth Spanish manager Luis Enrique has faced in the UCL — he’s beaten all of the previous five.
