AC Milan – AS Roma Predictions and Preview

  • AC Milan comes into this Coppa Italia quarter-final hoping to shake off the disappointment of losing to their rivals Inter in a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Under the guidance of Sergio Conceicao, the Rossoneri have now won just two games in five across all competitions (1 draw, 2 losses). They welcome Roma with an unremarkable record of two wins in the previous seven meetings (3 draws, 2 losses).
  • However, the situation improves at the San Siro, where Milan have been defeated by Roma just once since 2017 (4 wins, 3 draws). That defeat, which occurred in the Europa League as recently as April, is not a concern for the Rossoneri as they aim to end a long wait for success in this competition. Their last Coppa Italia trophy arrived back in 2003!
  • Although recent history may favor the hosts, the visitors are in better form. Roma scored late on Sunday to secure a 1-1 draw at home against Serie A leaders Napoli, extending their impressive recent run of form to just one loss in ten games across all competitions (6 wins, 3 draws). This means that Claudio Ranieri’s men will almost certainly enter this contest as the more confident side of the two.
  • Roma have also had a long wait for Coppa Italia success, last lifting the trophy back in 2008. In recent years, they have not fared well in the competition on the road, with each of their last three Coppa Italia away games ending in defeat – two of which saw them fail to score. This includes a 2-0 reverse here at the San Siro nearly three years ago against Inter, Milan’s rivals.
  • Players to watch: Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has been enjoying life in front of his own fans of late, scoring three goals in his past five matches at the San Siro. The first of these goals came against Roma in December! Angeliño has been the hero for Roma this week, scoring his first goals of the season against Frankfurt in European action on Thursday and then Napoli on Sunday.
  • Hot streak: Milan have not kept a clean sheet against Roma in any of the last 11 home-and-away meetings (W5, D4, L2).
