Match Preview

Two of the Championship’s unlikely leaders look to solidify their top-seven places as Wigan (W4, D1, L3) host Bristol City (W4, D2, L2) in totally opposing circumstances to their last meeting.
Newly promoted Wigan trail Bristol City by just one point and two places. They are amid a run of eleven home league games without defeat (W7, D4), including a 2-1 success over Hull midweek which marked three wins and a draw at home his season.
Seemingly punching above their weight also, Bristol City succumbed to a 4-2 away defeat to West Brom last time out, ending a run of four games without defeat with three clean sheets to boot.
However, despite Bristol’s away record being just three points shy of Wigan’s home haul (ten), these teams could be as evenly matched as their 24 accumulative goals (for/against) from eight games would suggest.
With the H2H edge from 24 previous encounters, Bristol City lead the way (W12, D7, L5) and did the double over Wigan in 2016/17.
Players to watch: Will Grigg (WIG) has three goals from seven games but hasn’t scored against Bristol in five appearances (W2, D1, L2).
Andreas Weimann hasn’t scored in three but with five goals this season (two from headers) as a converted centre-forward, he has already matched last season’s haul.
Stat attack: Wigan have scored first in four of their last five home matches.
The last H2H game saw both teams battling against relegation in a game with 23 fouls, 17 corners and three yellow cards.
With eight away goals scored, Bristol City’s last four away days have seen both teams score and over 2.5 goals.
With no wins in three career games against his opposing manager (D2, L1), Lee Johnson has met Paul Cook with Oldham and Barnsley. Cook is looking down the barrel of a third consecutive career loss to Bristol City.
