Alaves 1-2 Girona

Match Review

Thursday’s La Liga (LL) action sees Alavés (W2, D1, L2), all but safe from relegation, take on Girona (W1, D1, L3), who are still hoping for European qualification.
After three consecutive losses, Alavés have reversed their fortunes and are now undefeated in their last three games (W2, D1, L3). Abelardo Fernández’s side didn’t concede a single goal in those three games and a win here could see them climb four places to 11th in LL (depending on other results). At home in LL, Alavés are on a great run of seven wins, one draw and one loss in their last nine.
After achieving the best start ever for a newly-promoted team, Girona have seen a dip in form recently. Their last four games (D1, L3) have seen them claim just one point and they have conceded 13 goals and scored only four. Away from home in LL, Girona have one solitary win from their last nine games (W1, D2, L6).
The reverse game at Girona, which ended 3-2 to Alavés, was a turning point for both sides. Alavés were sitting 19th at the time with just six points, while they are now 14th with 38 points. On the other hand, Girona were sitting 14th and have since climbed to eighth and close to the Europe places.
Players to watch: Seventeen-goal Cristhian Stuani (GIR) scored a brace in Girona’s 6-3 loss to Real Madrid, but is goalless in his last three.
John Guidetti (ALA) scored his first goal in ten games in Sunday’s win over Elbar and has two LL goals so far.
Stat attack: For the first time since their four-game goalless run in November, Girona haven’t scored in their last two games.
In the last four head-to-head meetings at the Mendizorroza Stadium, the Basque side have the slight advantage with two wins in La Liga 2 (W2, D1, L1). This is their first ever meeting here in LL.
