St Etienne – Lille Predictions and Preview

  • Saint-Étienne has not had the start they were hoping for after returning to the top flight after a two-year absence. The team, which was promoted after winning the play-offs in Ligue 2 in 2023/24, is currently at the bottom of the table with only three losses so far this season. They are the only team in the division without a goal scored.
  • This is a sign of the pressure on manager Olivier Dall’Oglio. Following a 4-0 defeat at Brest in August, he has already used 23 different players in an attempt to find the winning formula. He attributes the team’s seven goals conceded in 2024/25 to a lack of malice, but with nine summer transfers to integrate, he admits it will take time for the team to gel.
  • Fans may expect another tough week in this clash against Lille. The visitors have been unbeaten in the last seven head-to-head matches at any venue, keeping four clean sheets in the process. This could be the confidence boost that Lille needs as they travel to Stade Geoffroy-Guichard after a hiatus in club football following defeats to Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League and Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.
  • Despite this, new boss Bruno Génésio has had a pretty decent start to his tenure. He has helped the Mastiffs win two of their opening three league matches for the first time since 2020/21, when they won Ligue 1. A repeat of that title success may be unlikely this season, but the head coach is “satisfied” with the start to the campaign. The two-week break should have given him time to get new signings up to speed before their debuts.
  • Experienced Saint-Étienne captain Yunis Abdelhamid may be dreading this matchup, as he has only earned a clean sheet in three of his 13 career meetings against Lille. Attempting to worsen that record will likely be Lille’s Mohamed Bayo, who is on a run of eight victories in the last nine club games he has scored in.
  • In terms of stats, six of the last seven goals that Lille have scored have come after halftime. None of the last ten H2H matches between St Etienne and Lille has seen both teams score in both halves. St Etienne has committed the highest number of fouls this season, with 53 in three matches (the league average is 35.9) at an average of 17.7 per match. On the other hand, Lille has allowed just 18 goal attempts at 6.0 per match, making them the lowest number in the league so far.
