Serbia – Denmark Predictions and Preview

  • On Friday night, Serbia achieved a remarkable late equaliser against Switzerland, resulting in a 1-1 draw. This means that they are not automatically relegated to League B for the next cycle of the UEFA Nations League (UNL). Instead, they could still secure a spot in the quarter-finals. However, to do so, they must defeat Denmark in their final group game of the campaign. If they fail to do so, they will finish third and qualify for the relegation play-offs.
  • The Eagles have been unbeaten in their last four home internationals, winning two and drawing two. Their hopes are high, especially since one of those draws was against the UNL group winners and European champions Spain. However, their record against Denmark is less encouraging. The only previous match Serbia has hosted against Denmark saw them lose 3-1 in a UEFA European Championship qualifier in November 2014.
  • Denmark, on the other hand, have never lost to Serbia anywhere (W4, D1). They are two points ahead of their hosts, and a repeat of their 0-0 draw at Euro 2024 would be enough for them to reach the quarter-finals. Like their upcoming opponents, they also scored late against Spain on Friday, but it proved to be a mere consolation (L 2-1). They are now three matches without a win (D1, L2), and Joachim Anderson and Pierre Emile-Højbjerg picked up bookings, which mean that they are both suspended for this one.
  • This could be problematic for the Scandinavians as they search for form on the road. They last won a game on foreign soil in October 2023 against San Marino (D4, L3 since). However, Kasper Schmeichel, Yussuf Poulsen, and Christian Eriksen were playing during that 2014 H2H victory in Belgrade, and their experience could prove vital as Brian Riemer seeks his first win since taking over as manager.
  • Left wing-back Aleksa Terzić was Serbia’s unlikely late hero against Switzerland, scoring his third goal of four for club or country after the 85th minute. Gustav Isaksen might give him more to think about at the other end after scoring in both of Denmark’s last two games, on both occasions netting his side’s opener.
  • Hot stat: There has been exactly one first-half goal in four of the five previous H2Hs (Denmark HT: W3, D1, L1).
