Portugal – Czech Republic Predictions and Preview

  • The first round of the Euro 2024 group stage will come to a close when Portugal, the 2016 champions, face the Czech Republic. Both teams last met in the UEFA League of Nations in 2022, where Portugal won twice by an aggregate score of 6-0.
  • Roberto Martínez’s side will be making their ninth appearance in the Euros. They hope to continue the trend of advancing beyond the group stages, as they have done in all eight previous tournaments.
  • Despite finishing third in their group in the last two tournaments, Portugal has won only one of their last six matches at this stage (4 draws, 1 loss). However, after dominating qualification Group J with a perfect record of 10 wins and a whopping aggregate score of 36-2, they are confident of advancing into the knockouts in a more convincing way this time.
  • The Czech Republic is appearing at their eighth consecutive European Championship finals, buoyed by the fact that they have progressed to the knockout stages in four of their last seven appearances. Under new coach Ivan Hašek, they have a perfect record of four wins in friendlies despite conceding in each match.
  • Their preparation for the finals was not without controversy, as midfielder Michal Sadílek injured himself while riding a tricycle downhill in Schladming while the Czechs were preparing in Austria. This is a far from timely injury, especially since the Czechs have won only once in their last six group stage Euro matches (2 draws, 3 losses), although they did advance to the knockout stages in 2021 from the third spot in their group.
  • Players to watch: Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese superstar, is set to become the first player to appear in six Euro tournaments. He scored against the Czechs in the quarter-finals of the 2012 edition, and he netted a brace in the last friendly match against Ireland (3-0). On the other hand, Antonín Barák from the Czech Republic may not have hit the same career heights as Ronaldo, but he has scored three goals in four friendly matches in 2024, two of which came beyond the 84th minute.
  • Hot stat: Portugal has won seven of their last ten competitive matches by at least a two-goal margin.
